Material Queen Episode 4

Peter meets up with Chu Man at the casting after bringing her a change of clothes. He notices she’s sick and tries to convince her to go see a doctor instead of staying for the casting. Even though today’s casting is to showcase the onsen amenity at the new luxury complex, in actuality the models will be bathing in freezing cold water sprinkled with dry ice to create a faux steam effect. Peter says Chu Man will die if she gets into the freezing water in her current state.

Sasha sees Chu Man and wonders why she has a right to be here. Chu Man lords it over Sasha that it was just a rumor that she got frozen by the agency, since she’s been invited here. Sasha thinks Chu Man ought to sincerely reflect on her transgression in Paris and not attend a casting today solely to trap another rich man.
Chu Man notices a bruise on Sasha’s arm covered by concealer and taunts her for getting liposuction to prep for today’s casting. She tells Sasha to stop worrying about her, and pay more attention to herself. Sasha is pissed, announcing to the sniggering models that whatever she does is because she wants to succeed in becoming the Top Model, not to sleep with dirty old men. Chu Man has no ready retort for that, and she looks over at the box of dry ice.

Jia Hao rushes to meet Mai Long, who is the director for this casting and allows Jia Hao to be a set runner for the day and earn some money. Jia Hao worries that the models bathing in dry ice will suffer but Mai Long says it’s their job to suffer. They can’t bathe in real hot water because the steam will fog up the camera lens, so it has to be faux-steam.

Jia Hao and Mai Long walk into the set and run into all the models, including Chu Man and Peter. Everyone recognizes Jia Hao as the fake William Norman. Both Chu Man and Jia Hao are horrified while the other models snark at the upcoming show to be had. Mai Long says that Chu Man is the woman responsible for Jia Hao’s current fate, and he’ll make sure she “pays” for what she did to his friend.

Mai Long tells the models what the performance is required of them – they need to film for three-minutes in the freezing water and act like they are in warm bliss. All the models deliver the performance one-by-one. Peter gets Chu Man something warm to drink before it’s her turn. When it’s Chu Man’s turn, and she gamely gets into the water.

Peter notices after awhile that it’s beyond three-minutes, and Jia Hao overhears that Chu Man is sick as a dog but would rather die than not do her best at any modeling assignment. Peter tells Jia Hao that he can’t stop Chu Man from doing something she’s set her mind to, and when it comes to modeling, she would rather die than fail. Mai Long confesses to Jia Hao that he’s torturing Chu Man on purpose to get back at her for Jia Hao’s sake.

Mai Long finally calls cuts but Chu Man is so cold she can’t get out of the pool. Jia Hao jumps into the pool to assist Chu Man. She tries to push him away but finally she succumbs to the cold and collapses. Jia Hao drags her out of the pool and screams for the staff to call the ambulance.

Yen Kai Ming is playing golf and getting an update that Sasha has been selected as the spokesmodel for the new housing development. It’s also discussed that Chu Man did a great job despite being sick, but taking into consideration the scandal from Paris, it was decided not to select her because her image isn’t currently very positive.

The government official who has been pressuring the Due South Market denizens to move meets up with Yen Kai Ming. He promises that he’s gotten every piece of property Yen Kai Ming has always asked for, except the Due South property is very dicey. Yen Kai Ming reminds him that his daughter goes to an expensive private school, and if he doesn’t get him the Due South Market, then he can’t earn his commission.

Peter looks around Chu Man’s new digs and bemoans that it’s not what Chu Man described to him. Her neighbor is a chicken, for god’s sake! Jia Hao matter-of-factly says that this room was formerly a chicken shed, and the closet Peter is leaning on was a chicken coop. Peter looks comically horrified. Jia Hao thinks Chu Man’s family ought to be contacted since she’s this ill, to which Peter lets slip that she’s an orphan, what kind of family can she possibly have.

Jia Hao is shocked and Peter regrets saying it, telling Jia Hao never to let Chu Man know that he revealed her past to Jia Hao. He thinks about their past in Paris, confessing to Peter that he thought Chu Man was a shallow superficial gold digger filled with a mouthful of lies. But now….. Peter cuts him off, saying Jia Hao is correct, Chu Man is selfish. She was abandoned by her only relative at an orphanage as a child, forced to accepted the reality that people are selfish. She doesn’t think there is anything wrong with lying if it can get her what she wants. She has relied on herself her entire life.

Peter says Chu Man is a materialistic gold digger, because the brand names, the jewelry, the numbers in her bank account, those things will never betray her or abandon her. But Chu Man is not superficial at all, she is more aware of what the real world is like than either Peter or Jia Hao. Everything Chu Man does, she’s thought carefully about it. Her childhood is a regret for her, so she will not allow her life to suffer another mistake. Jia Hao understands why Chu Man hates him because of Paris, since he ruined Chu Man’s future with Chairman Wang and her modeling reputation.

Peter considers it all Jia Hao’s fault for ruining Chu Man, and forcing Peter to work twice as hard to get her reputation in the modeling industry back. Peter calls it a night since he has an early morning call. He orders Jia Hao to take good care of Chu Man as payment to Peter for what he owed him. Peter heads out, past the sqwaking chickens. Jia Hao covers Chu Man more securely and sits there looking at her.It’s morning at the Due South Market and Chu Man wakes up to the sound of something bubbling in her room, plus an unique odor. She sees Jia Hui and the bra auntie sleeping on her floor. She notices a pot of Oriental medicine cooking in the corner and she rushes over to turn it off. Jia Hao comes in and asks if she burned herself? She doesn’t care, she just wants it taken outside since it’s stinking up her belongings. Jia Hui touches Chu Man’s forehead and notices that her fever has broken.

The Auntie says that all entertainers expose their body parts all the time so are wont to catch a cold, and she runs down a list of body parts until she gets to the breast, and Jia Hui adorably reminds Auntie that Chu Man didn’t show her breast, it was just an accident (since Chu Man was once in the scandal rags for a boob exposing dress). Auntie hands Chu Man a very unfashionable stomach wrapper that will keep her warm. Jia Hao comes back inside with a bowl of the Oriental medicine, telling Chu Man to drink it while its hot.The butcher comes inside with a pot of freshly-slaughter pork ribs cooked with herbs, telling Chu Man this will be great for her health. He offers to take a sip first to test the temperature when suddenly Leo comes running in bearing a fresh lobster, which he promptly slices through the neck and blood drips into the soup. Chu Man is totally horrified! Jia Hui explains that lobster blood is the King of all nutritious elements, and only Leo can slice it so perfectly that the blood will drip cleanly out.

Chu Man stands up and tells everyone to get out, she doesn’t want any of their proffered items. She hates the smell of moth balls (on the blanket they brought her) and Oriental medicine. She also wants to eat vegetarian today. She reminds them again that she doesn’t want anything from them. But Auntie says she is a family member of the Due South Market now, and how can they ignore a sick family member. Everyone walks out and Jia Hao explains to the gang that Chu Man is probably upset because she lost her casting call.Chu Man tries to go back to sleep, but she realizes that this is the first time she’s been sick and someone has taken care of her. She gets up and drinks the bowl of Oriental medicine.

Suddenly Chu Man hears a commotion outside and she walks out to find Allen’s mom berating Jia Hao. Apparently Allen changed his test music to the theme song from SpongeBob Squarepants and she’s furious at what Jia Hao said to her son.

Jia Hao calmly says that he just wants Allen to enjoy playing the violin, rather than being forced to. Jia Hui tries to explain that Jia Hao is qualified to teach Allen since he graduated from the Paris Music Academy. Allen’s mom walks over and looks at the framed diploma and announces that while she may not understand French, she knows that the paper hanging on the wall has the word “disqualified” on it. Jia Hui argues that it’s a graduation diploma.Allen’s mom walks out angry that her son was taught by a complete fraud. She even disparages the market as a dirty uncouth place that couldn’t possible turn out a genuine musician. Everyone is finally fed up with this condescending broad and speaks up in defense of Jia Hao. She can accuse them of anything, but she cannot accuse Jia Hao’s character and his accomplishments.

Jia Hao finally tells everyone to be quiet, and confesses that it’s true, he was expelled from the Paris Music Academy. Jia Hui is shocked and Jia Hao apologizes to his sister. Jia Hui says he ought to apologize to Allen’s mom, who threatens to sue Jia Hao for lying about his credentials. Jia Hui starts begging her not to destroy Jia Hao’s future.

Jia Hui offers to get on her knees, which is when Jia Hao gets down on his knees and apologizes.Chu Man watches everything with a shocked expression. She walks over to Allen’s mom and starts insulting her horrifically ugly outfit, wondering how someone who lives in the luxury high rise next door could possibly have such bad taste. Plus she has a very dirty mouth. Did she win the lottery or something? Allen’s mom tries to explain but Chu Man gives her the hand, telling her to stay one feet away from her sight line otherwise her horrible fashion will ruin Chu Man’s sense of style.

The market folks start laughing at Chu Man deriding Allen’s mom’s outfit. Chu Man says that Allen’s mom looks like a Christmas tree, wrapped in seawood, with holes poked in her sweater. Chu Man then explains to the market folks that the reason Jia Hao was expelled from school was because he helped Chu Man in Paris. Back in Paris, Chu Man was hoodwinked by a rich guy named William Norman. Jia Hao found out and took on a part time job to make money to help Chu Man. He was expelled after the school found out. Chu Man thinks to herself that she said pretty much the truth, with only a little bit of white lies, but it’s to do a good thing.

Chu Man says that Jia Hao was trying to protect everyone which is why he lied, and everyone agrees that Jia Hao is still their pride and joy. Jia Hao is upset and rushes back to his room. He looks at the poster of his idol Eugene on his wall, thinking back to his father’s wish for Jia Hao to become an accomplished violinist. Jia Hao cries at yet another reminder of his failure.

The market gang is sitting in the living room. Auntie starts by remembering that on the night her husband died, she wanted to kill herself, but she heard the sound of a violin playing that stopped herself. She rushed outside and saw little Jia Hao standing under the moonlight playing his violin, and he was like an angel giving Auntie another reason to keep living. The butcher remembers that on the night when he had his first kiss, it was also Jia Hao’s violin that accompanied him.Leo remembers in ’98, when all the fish got a disease and most died, Jia Hao’s violin music somehow made the few remaining fish breed successfully and help replenish his stock. Everyone looks expectantly at Chu Man, who wonders if everyone is playing a game of truth confession and she has to be next? She doesn’t think this has anything to do with her, but she finally sighs and says that the first time she met Jia Hao, she thought she was standing at the pinnacle of her life (i.e. Chairman Wang just proposed to her), but in truth it was the lowest she ever felt emotionally.

We flash back to Chu Man walking into that bar and hearing Jia Hao playing the violin. Even though other random stuff happened since then, but that night Jia Hao’s music gave her immense comfort. Jia Hui says that it doesn’t matter if the Paris Music Academy doesn’t appreciate her brother’s talent, she’ll find him another school. If she has to sell her blood or liver, she’ll come up with the money. Jia Hao rushes in and tells her it’s not necessary. He’s decided that he’s got no future in music since it’s a small industry and he’s been rejected everywhere already.Perhaps his expulsion is God’s way of telling Jia Hao that he’s not anyone special, he’s just an average guy. Jia Hui cries and disagrees, reminding her brother that he has perfect pitch, listening to any music once and is able to play it by memory. Jia Hui says Jia Hao is a musical genius, and his music touches everyone at the market. Jia Hao says for her to wake up, he just wants to get a job and help her pay down the debt she’s incurred for his musical education.

Jia Hao runs out, screaming that it was his dad and Jia Hui’s dream for him to become a violinist. Jia Hao goes scuba diving, Jia Hui tells Chu Man that Jia Hao went to look for their dad and won’t be home anytime soon. While Jia Hao is scuba diving, he thinks back to his childhood.He used to cry to his dad that he wants to go to amusement parks like other kids. Dad tells his son not to be envious of others or covet their world. If he’s sad, he goes for a swim. Deep in the water, there is no delineation between rich and poor, it’s simply a beautiful world surrounding him. He hands Jia Hao a picture of a coral reef and Jia Hao tapes it on his wall.

Chu Man asks if Jia Hao goes scuba diving everytime he encounters something unpleasant? Jia Hui say it was his dad’s coping mechanism and now Jia Hao uses it to remind himself that life can still be beautiful even in the face of adversity. Chu Man is upset that Jia Hao was sold a crock of optimism as his childhood philosphy. Jia Hui says that their dad was Jia Hao’s biggest influence. Since they knew Jia Hao has musical talent, he worked everyday at the market, and on nights and weekend he would go pick up bottles for recycling, all to pay for music lessons. Jia Hui knows Jia Hao doesn’t really want to give up music, because he still feels so much guilt towards their dad.

Turns out that on the day of Jia Hao’s violin recital, he was teased by other rich kids for smelling bad because his dad picked up trash and worked at a market. We see Jia Hao’s dad rushing to watch him perform. Jia Hao decides not to perform and walks out. His dad asks him why he didn’t perform today, and says that he is here to give Jia Hao something, It’s a handwritten and signed piece by Eugene. Jia Hao doesn’t believe his dad can have such a genuine item.Jia Hao keeps ignoring his dad, who suddenly collapses on the ground. Jia Hao rushes back to assist and tries to give his dad medicine but it is too late. Jia Hao opens the manuscript and sees that it’s a genuine Eugene signature on it. He cries and asks his dad to please get up, he didn’t mean to ignore him.

Jia Hui explains to Chu Man that Jia Hao’s biggest regret was that the last words he ever said to his dad was to tell him to “go away.” Since that day, Jia Hao has worked tirelessly to make his dad’s dream come true. We see Jia Hao finally surfacing from his dive.

Jia Hui cries that the last ten years of hard work has just evaporated now that Jia Hao has been expelled. She cries to Chu Man that she was such an idiot sister for taking his expulsion letter and blowing it up and framing it. Chu Man grabs some tissue for Jia Hui and comforts her that she didn’t know what she was doing. To make Jia Hui feel better, Chu Man confesses that for years, she pronounced agnes b. as again b. Oh Chu Man, you are priceless.Chu Man keeps awkwardly trying to comfort Jia Hui, until finally she gets uncomfortable and wants to go back to her room. Jia Hui grabs Chu Man, saying that she can help Jia Hui convince Jia Hao to not give up the violin. Chu Man says that she doesn’t know Jia Hao that well to get involved in his business. Jia Hui doesn’t think so, since Jia Hao helped Chu Man back in Paris, and when Chu Man was sick Jia Hao was extremely worried.

He’s nice to all girls, but Jia Hui can tell he’s especially nice to Chu Man. Jia Hui asks Chu Man to please convince her brother. Chu Man refuses, until Jia Hui says that next month’s rent will be waived if she does it, which is when Chu Man immediately agrees and tells Jia Hui she’ll take care of everything.

Chu Man gets a text later that night and it’s in French. She goes to Jia Hao’s room and finds him coming out of the shower shirtless. Chu Man quickly looks away while Jia Hao impatiently asks why she’s here.Chu Man says Jia Hui is mad but she still cooked his favorite food for dinner. Jia Hao understands that it’s always like this between them, Jia Hui loves him too much to stay mad at him. Chu Man tells him to not give up violin then. Jia Hao throws her words back at her – they ought to acknowledge the cruel reality that Jia Hao has no choice but to give up since no one is willing to hire him as a violinist.

Chu Man admits there is nothing wrong with accepting harsh reality. She shares a story about her “friend” who has had a very hard life. When she was a kid, her mom took her to the amusement park for cotton candy and toys, and then deposited her at an orphanage afterwards. The girl was unhappy growing up, always sitting in front of the window, hoping one day her mom would come get her. Finally on her birthday, which was also Christmas Eve, her mom didn’t come or call or send a card. The little girl realized her mom was never coming, and accepted it.Chu Man says as long as Jia Hao isn’t going to regret giving up violin ten or twenty years down the line, he’ll be fine making that decision now. Jia Hao asks if the friend still sits in front of the window sill and looks out? Chu Man says of course not, the friend isn’t a masochist who likes to remember the painful memories. Jia Hao asks if the friend is happy now, since she’s locked away all her hope because she’s afraid of experiencing loss again.

Both Jia Hao and Chu Man know they are talking directly to each other. Jia Hao tells Chu Man not to let her mother’s abandonment turn her cold and withdrawn, allowing her life to be empty. Jia Hao understands why Chu Man is a gold digger, confessing that if he grew up all alone, he’d probably value the same things she does. He wants to apologize for the harsh words he said to her the other day.Chu Man tells him to stop looking at her with that disgusting look of pity. Her life doesn’t suck, if she sold her brand name items, she’s someone with a few zeros in her bank account. Jia Hao laughs that Chu Man is clearly feeling all better now, so he’ll stop worrying about her. He apologizes for dragging her out of the casting. Chu Man says it’s no big deal, crap happens in the entertainment world, she’s just sad she missed out on a chance with Yen Kai Ming.

Chu Man suffered in the cold water and then got sick, so it’s a shame Yen Kai Ming didn’t get a chance to see her sick-queen routine. Jia Hao feels Chu Man’s forehead and asks if she’s still feverish. Chu Man suddenly realizes that Jia Hao’s concern for her is perhaps a tad too interested, and warns him that all men are attracted to her, but he needs to remember they can never ever be because Jia Hao is not a rich man. Suddenly Chu Man remembers the text and asks Jia Hao to translate, and turns out Yen Kai Ming is inviting her to a party at his house to welcome the violinist Eugene to Taiwan.

Chu Man tells Jia Hao to send a response text in French, which will make her look better if she knows more languages. He reluctantly does so, but reminds Chu Man that a rich man like Yen Kai Ming won’t like these petty tactics and will appreciate a sincere woman with depth. Chu Man unfurls the poster of Eugene which Jai Hao has rolled up, and she asks him to accompany her to the party so that he can teach her more about Eugene and also meet his idol in person.Chu Man reminds Jia Hao that she lost the casting because Mai Long tortured her at the casting and she got sick living in his house, so really it’s all his fault she’s in this state. She teases that he “owes” her, but really she’s totally pouting adorably to get him to agree to be her date.

The next day, Chu Man and Jia Hao are dressed to go shopping. She reminds him that he is her friend who just returned from Paris as a musician and is a second generation chaebol. She looks through his wallet and finds no credit cards, and sees that his clothes are all cheap threads. Chu Man needs Jia Hao to fit the role and so they need some proper items.

Chu Man starts her lesson on how Cinderella became the princess.

Case 1: Dress Accordingly.
Rich people will only give you the time of day if they think you are in the same league as them. Even Cinderella needed a dress at the ball before the prince noticed her. Chu Man and Jia Hao go shopping and she charges it all on her card.

Jia Hao asks if Chu Man doesn’t think a person’s inner beauty is the most important thing? Chu Man laughs and asks Jia Hao if he was initially attracted to her back in Paris because of her “inner beauty”?

Case 2: Understand The Target.
Rich people are either working hard to make more money or hanging out in their natural surroundings. Chu Man takes Jia Hao to learn about fine wine and cigars so he can appear knowledgeable in the same wealthy vernacular as the rich. He simply has to know the subjects to converse it. He also needs to read the luxury magazines. Chu Man says that soirees of the rich are the perfect place to meet them.

Case 3: Lower Their Defenses.
Chu Man takes Jia Hao drinking and says the best way is to drink and socialize with the rich to lower their shields. Jia Hao says just like Chu Man disarmed him in Paris, and she concedes she did just that.

Case 4: Lock In Your Prey.
The target must be identified and researched thoroughly to make sure the person is as wealthy as he appears to be.

Chu Man says she needs to all this research because the competition is fierce amongst women to be the one chosen. She takes Jia Hao to a bookstore and grabs some business books which are necessary reading to have an understanding of how the rich actually make money. They go wine tasting, where Chu Man points out that men who like different alcohols have different personalities.

Back at the Due South Market, Leo approaches Jia Hui wielding a giant knife and hands her a piece of paper, telling her it’s for her. She thinks he’s giving her a love letter, but turns out it’s a letter left by the government official promising substantial compensation if they agree to move, but warning them this is their last chance. If they refuse, they will receive nothing.Chu Man is hanging out with Jia Hao in his room and memorizing facts about Eugene while doing yoga. Jia Hao reminds her that knowing facts is not the same as understanding Eugene’s music. Chu Man agrees and asks to borrow Jia Hao’s violin. She goes to grab it which freaks Jia Hao out and he yells that it’s his precious baby! Chu Man smiles and wonders if Jia Hao still wants to give up the violin since he’s so protective of it.

Jia Hao grumbles that he just wants Chu Man to be careful with it. Chu Man takes the violin and starts to play it tentatively. Jia Hao aks if she’s playing the violin or attempting to slaughter chickens? He gets up and stands behind her, slowing adjusting her pose and helping her play some notes on the violin. It’s such a lovely moment between them, and both smile as the music starts to drift from the chords. Jia Hao finally steps away as he realizes the awkwardness of the mood.

After being expelled from the Paris Music Academy, Jia Hao tries to sneak home through a seemingly empty Due South Marketplace. To no avail, as the jubilant folks of the market were just lying in wait to give him a surprise homecoming.

The erect a makeshift stage for their pride and joy – the most successful son to come out of the Due South Market. Jia Hao’s sister Jia Hui gets onstage with him and present him with a giant enlarged framed “diploma” from the Academy, which is of course the notice that Jia Hao has been expelled from the school.It’s both heartwrenching that no one can read French to understand it, but bittersweet that they are so very proud of him. Everyone talks about how they are so proud of Jia Hao, who they know must have worked his hardest at the Academy in order to come home after accomplishing his goal.

Jia Hao tries to explain but he doesn’t have the heart to disappoint his sister, especially when mention is made of how his deceased father would have been so proud of him. Everyone cheers on Jia Hao, and he has no choice but to bow his head and promise everyone that he will continue to fulfill their expectations of him.Jia Hao goes home with Jia Hui, who explains that she’s converted the chicken shed into a spare guest bedroom to rent out so they can make extra money. Jia Hui says that Yi Xian mailed back Jia Hao things from Paris as well. Jia Hao promises to find a job soon to make money for the family. Jia Hui is so proud and wants him to wait for the perfect job, like being a music professor at a prestigious university.

Chu Man comes home to her swanky apartment, only to be surprised to find another skanky chick in residence. Chairman Wang arrives and tells Chu Man that this new chick is the new resident of this apartment and Chu Man needs to move out. In fact, he’s tallied all the money he spent on her in the last few years and she has to pay him back.He’s so thorough and stingy that he’s even added to the tally all the coupons and gift certificates he gave Chu Man. I swear this Chairman Wang is a piece of work, but I love how he’s not a fool. He’s a bastard, but not an idiot. Chu Man says she’ll tell the world about his miserly ways, but he’s not cowed by her threat. If she tells the world, it’s all the better, because the world will know Chu Man to be the gold digger she is.

Chairman Wang laughs and tells Chu Man to see if any other rich man will fall for her tricks. Or maybe she can find her poor student, since he’s back after being expelled from the Academy and waiting for Chu Man to go comfort him. Chu Man realizes now that Chairman Wang got Jia Hao expelled.He remands Chu Man pay him back now. She agrees to pay him in installments. He tells her to leave now since this is no longer her home. Before she leaves, he asks her to say “I love you” once, even if for show. If she says it, he’ll forgive the NT 3 million she owes him. Chu Man refuses to say it and leaves. The Chairman is just flabbergasted that she won’t even say three little words in exchange for so much money.Chu Man takes her luggage and leaves. She wonders why she can’t say three words in exchange for so much money. She looks at her Chaumet bracelet, thinking that it’s not her fault Jia Hao got expelled since she didn’t report him. She shakes her head and tells herself not to feel guilty about it.

Back at the marketplace, Jia Hao takes out his dad’s old rickety bike and looks at it. He remembers following behind his daddy to pick trash, and how hard his dad worked to make Jia Hao’s musical dreams come true.

Jia Hao cries on the bike, sobbing silent manly tears of guilt and frustration.

Peter arrives at the modeling agency bright and early in the morning only to find Chu Man sleeping on the sofa. She explains that Chairman Wang kicked her out and she needed a free place to crash for the night. Peter remarks on how many suitcases she appears to own. Peter suggests that Chu Man’s life would be easier if she could just say “I love you.” He wonders if Chu Man still believes in that spell cast on her as a child.Chu Man says she doesn’t believe in magic. As for the money she owes the Chairman, she’ll just take extra modeling assignments and work harder to pay him back. Peter looks a little uncomfortable before telling Chu Man that her assignments have been given to Sasha and the boss has decreed that Chu Man is to be frozen for the time being.

Sasha doesn’t want to be accused of stabbing Chu Man in the back, so she hands Chu Man the case file from the AG Group’s latest real estate development, where Sasha has been selected to represent the agency to attend the upcoming casting for the spokesmodel. Peter shows Chu Man that the news reports from Paris have traveled back to Taiwan.Peter tells Chu Man to lay low and time will make people forget her scandal. Chu Man refuses to rest when Sasha is lording it over her head. She snagged the AG Group modeling assignment envelope, where she puts in her picture to deliver to the casting as well.

Chu Man is unapologetic. She has no place to live and nothing to fall back on, which offends her lifelong principles. She picks the CEO of the AG Group, young, handsome, and single Yen Kai Ming, as her next target. She’s decided to find a place to live near a very expensive high rise so she can run into rich people.

The broker finds Chu Man a new apartment, right inside the Due South Market.Turns out the ramshackle market is situated right next to a bunch of luxurious high rises. Chu Man walks inside the market and steps over vegetables and chickens to arrive outside Jia Hui’s house. Jia Hui has been waiting for her and welcomes her new renter. Jia Hui takes Chu Man inside, unable to boast a little about her younger brother who just graduated from the Paris Music Academy.

Chu Man is shown to her new apartment, which is cute but nothing like the brochure advertising the room looks like. For example, the room was advertised as having pets nearby, which turns out to be chickens. In fact, all the amenities listed on the brochure all turn out to be all clever wording by Jia Hui.Chu Man wants her money back, but Jia Hui has already used it to pay her mortgage for the month. She asks Chu Man to stay for now. She’s even built a giant closet for Chu Man, made out of a former chicken coop. God this is priceless. Chu Man wonders how her name brands can be placed where chickens used to live, to which Jia Hui says there is nothing wrong since chickens happily lived there.

Chu Man agrees to live here for the time being until Jia Hui can return her deposit. Jia Hui promises not to tell anyone about Chu Man’s real identity as a famous model. Chu Man looks around the room and sighs.

Jia Hao goes on auditions as he searches for a job, only to be repeatedly turned down because he hasn’t graduated yet. He finally gets a job tutoring a young boy whose intense Tiger mom is forcing him to learn the violin at the expense of any childhood joy. Jia Hao can tell this boy is talented, but worries that his heart isn’t in it because his mom picked the song he has to play, telling him that he has to do this to get a good score and to make his dad proud. Jia Hao suggests teaching him to play a song he likes.

Jia Hao tries to sneak into his room later that night but is waylaid by Jia Hui. She tells him to pray to his “diploma” every time he comes home to thank the ancestors for allowing him to succeed. Jia Hui explains that their new renter is a model, to which Jia Hao says he’ll avoid her at all costs.Chu Man is getting ready to eat instant noodles, bitching that she’s spoken to more poor people today than in years. Suddenly she hears the sounds of a violin wafting through the room. She flashes back to the time spent with Jia Hao, since it’s the same song he played for her. She wonders if maybe she’s been possessed, or maybe this song is so popular that even her landlord’s younger violinist brother can play it. Jia Hao stops playing and tells himself to stop thinking about “that girl.”

Chu Man goes to take a shower when suddenly the water turns cold, and then the power shuts off. Chu Man stumbles out in the dark and Jia Hao is told to go reset the power. He finds Chu Man on the ground and goes to help her.

The two of them recognize each other simultaneously and jump apart.Chu Man grabs her towel and asks him if he saw anything. Jia Hao snarks that it isn’t anything he hasn’t seen before. After he helps her back to her room, he asks why of all the places in Taipei she’s renting a room from his sister, especially in a place like the Due South Market where she would normally never come.Chu Man says she doesn’t want to be here if she had a choice.

Jia Hao says that if he had a choice, he’s be in Paris eating baguettes, playing the violin and enjoying the scenery, except she got him expelled from school. Jia Hao warns Chu Man not to tell his sister that he got expelled, otherwise he’d kick her out.

Chu Man could care less about Jia Hao’s charade with his sister. All she wants is to quickly get out of here, but for the fact that she needs money. Jia Hao takes her limited edition Dior bag and tells her to sell it if she needs money so badly. She refuses, telling him she’s waited since when Bush Jr. was still a president to buy this bag.

Jia Hao asks if she’ll die to have one less bag and Chu Man says yes, she’ll die.Suddenly she hears a trickle noise and is told that this room used to be a chicken coop so perhaps the pumbling isn’t so top-notch. Chu Man notices that water is leaking on her closet. She quickly grabs her clothes and then uses the comforter from the bed to cover the rest of the items. She tells Jia Hao that she’d rather not sleep with a blanket tonight and catch a cold if she can protect her brand name items.

If she got a cold, some cold medicine will fix her up. If her irreplaceable items are destroyed, nothing can fix it. Jia Hao tells her to wake up from her delusions, but Chu Man says that her brand name items talk to her. When she walks into a store wearing it, the people treat her with courtesy. She can be treated as someone important.There is nothing wrong with a person wanting to climb the social ladder. Why take the bus when you can take a private jet. Unlike the fake people out there, she’s honest and willing to admit her own goals. She knows what she wants and she’s going to get it. Jia Hao asks why she doesn’t earn the money then, rather than getting it from another person. Always living to please that person, worried that she’ll get tossed aside at any time.

What does she have left in the end – brand name accessories? Does she have any friends or family, people who genuinely care about her? Chu Man retorts that Jia Hao is no better than her. He’s lying to his sister about getting expelled. Jia Hao says he’s lying to protect his family from getting hurt. A woman like her won’t understand what it means to care about another person and want to protect their feelings.Chu Man says that even if she spends someone else’s money, it’s a fair trade between two people. She doesn’t lie, cheat, or steal. Jia Hao thinks she did lie in Paris, when she was trying to lure William Norman. Chu Man says they both lied in Paris to get what they wanted. One of them is gunning for money, the other for romance. Each of them is no better than the other.

Jia Hao says that when he lied back in Paris, it wasn’t because he wanted something from Chu Man. Sometimes one just wants to present the best side to the person they like. Jia Hao says she can’t possibly understand, since to her love is used to barter for money. Chu Man says they simply have different principles on this subject matter. She doesn’t care if Jia Hao thinks poorly of her.They have no reason to have any interaction going forward because he’s not a rich man. She asks him to put up with her and stop bothering her while she’s temporarily living here. Jia Hao tells her that what she said to him in Paris about living life, she’s not worthy of saying such meaningful thoughts because she’s such a shitty person.

Chu Man is woken up at 6 am by the sound of a rooster crowing. When she gets up she sways a little, realizing she has a headache and might be coming down with a cold. She realizes that she’s covered with another blanket, even though her other blanket is still on the shelf protecting her clothes. Chu Man takes her blanket and heads outside, finding the denizens of the marketplace already up and hawking their wares.She finds Jia Hui selling vegetables and is taken to meet all the marketplace folks. Chu Man looks around and realizes everyone is eyeing her with wonder. She agrees to meet everyone, lowering herself to wallow in the mud with the commoners. She thanks Jia Hui for bringing her a blanket last night, but is told that Jia Hao brought it to her.

Jia Hui teases Chu Man as knowing Jia Hao back in Paris, since Jia Hao said that if it wasn’t for Chu Man, he wouldn’t be back in Taiwan right now. Leo asks if Chu Man is the famous model….Lin Chi Ling. Or perhaps she’s Sasha? Finally she’s recognized as the famous Lin Chu Man, who was recently in the scandal rags for being a golddigger and also having other embarrassing moments captured by the magazines.She’s complimented for being so classy and beautiful. The bra selling auntie brings some bras over as a gift to Chu Man, for taking care of Jia Hao in Paris. Everyone thanks her for taking care of their pride and joy Jia Hao. Chu Man is told how Jia Hui borrowed all this money to support Jia Hao, and how he’s her only hope.Jia Hui asks Chu Man if she can deliver a cellphone to Jia Hao, who is supposedly teaching at a top university. Chu Man agrees, but when she gets to campus she finds out that there is no class today. She calls the number left by Jia Hao and finds out it’s just a simple music school.

Jia Hao is teaching the little boy Allen a song he loves, but the crazy mom finds out and starts screaming at Jia Hao for teaching her son useless music. Jia Hao tries to speak up for Allen but is told to do as the mom asked and just teach Allen the song he will be tested on. The mom is not pleased that Jia Hao has opinions of his own.Chu Man shows up at the music school and sees Jia Hao getting chewed out by the mom. Jia Hao talks back to her and says that Allen should be playing because he loves music. The mom takes Allen away and says he won’t be coming back for more lessons. The boy cries out for his teacher. The owner fires Jia Hao, telling him that he needs to just do what the parents require of him since they are paying his salary.

Chu Man sees this and she looks genuinely distressed. As Jia Hao walks out, the receptionist hands him a phone left by a girl, described as very beautiful like a model. Jia Hao gets a call about a job that can help pay a few days bills. Peter calls Chu Man to tell her that the AG Group casting is about to begin. She promises to be right there.

At an high end auction for antiques, AG Group CEO Yen Kai Ming makes his grand entrance and wins the bid. He announces that he’s planning to build more luxury homes to improve people’s living standards.News reports that people are protesting his continued building to drive up real estate prices.

Chu Man hurries to the casting, but even the taxi driver can tell that she’s not feeling well and asks if she wants to go to the hospital. Chu Man doesn’t have a lot of money and asks that he just take her to the casting.Her skirt has a snag that is caught on the seat of the taxi.Chu Man arrives and exits the taxi, not realizing that her skirt is unraveling behind her.

She walks into the luxury building and asks the reception to point her to the casting site. We see Yen Kai Ming arrive and walk into the lobby. Chu Man notices Yen Kai Ming as simply a seemingly well-dressed, goodlooking, and single man. She smiles at him by the elevator, but Yen Kai Ming notices instead that her skirt has unraveled.

He takes off his suit jacket and offers it to Chu Man, who wraps it around her waist. She calls Peter to tell him to rush over with another outfit. The elevator arrives and Chu Man asks if Yen Kai Ming wants to get on, so she can return the jacket to him. Yen Kai Ming chooses to ride with her even though his assistant reminds him that an important client is waiting for him.When they get off on Chu Man’s floor, she teeters a bit due to getting sick.

She drops her pocketbook and Yen Kai Ming picks it up only to discover that it contains notes on his daily schedule and a vow to land him. He asks Chu Man why she’s keeping tabs on Yen Kai Ming and she sasses that it’s none of his business.

When he asks if she wants to go see a doctor, she replies that medicine can only give her temporary relief, but if she goes to the casting she can potentially land Yen Kai Ming forever. She walks away and Yen Kai Ming looks at her with a curious expression.

Material Queen Episode 2

Chu Man rushes back to the hotel to sneak in before Chairman Wang notices that she’s gone. She orders poor Peter to stall her sugar daddy.

Jia Hao goes home to his tiny little Parisian flat. He finds a bowl of pickles on the desk and eats one. His roommate Ke Mai Long grabs the rest and reminds him that they can only eat one per meal. Mai Long suggest they go wait outside a restaurant known for distributing leftovers after closing time.

Jia Hao is told that there was a tiny fire today in the apartment and Yi Xian got smoked.Jia Hao runs to the bathroom, where Yi Xian walks out with her face still sooty.

Mai Long says Yi Xian got smoked because she was more worried about saving a music book from Jia Hao’s idol Eugene.

Jia Hao cleans Yi Xian’s face and tells her not to do this again. Yi Xian makes an excuse that soot is good for her facial complexion. Jia Hao reminds her that as a pianist she needs to protect her finger so they can play together in the future.

Yi Xian leaves and Mai Long remarks that Yi Xian will do anything for Jia Hao, which she has been doing her entire life. He thinks Yi Xian considers herself Mrs. Tsai. Jia Hao says that Yi Xian thinks of herself as his sister, and he’s confirmed it with her. Mai Long says that the day Jia Hao gets with another woman, then they’ll see if Yi Xian still thinks of herself as his sister. Jia Hao says that day has arrived.

Peter hides in Chu Man’s room and tries to stall Chairman Wang.

He calls the Chairman and explains that Chu Man is doing a facial in the bathroom. Peter ends up pretending to be Chu Man and sticking his hand out the door to caress the Chairman to allay his suspicious.Chu Man finally runs back into the hotel room and switches places with Peter, pretending that she changed into a dress to put on a fashion show for the Chairman. He appears to be mollified, but later that night when they are sleeping in bed, he sees Chu Man smiling in her sleep and clutching a solitary earring in her palm. The Chairman notices that she’s not wearing his engagement ring.

Jia Hao has his violin recital the next morning at the Paris Music Academy.He takes a deep breath, thinking back to what Chu Man said to him on the Seine (that if he wants to play, he just needs to go ahead and play). Jia Hao starts his performance and his professor listens intently. Jia Hao thinks back to all his interactions with Chu Man the day before.The professor compliments him on his performance being the best he has ever heard from Jia Hao, and the most emotional piece played today by anyone. Professor asks him what happened yesterday that he was able to put such emotion into the playing?

Jia Hao goes to Chaumet to buy a very special gift for the girl he likes. He explains that she doesn’t know the real him, but he wants to show her. The sales lady brings out the same bracelet shown to Chu Man, which can only be put on by a person who genuinely loves another, and can only be taken off by the person who put it on. Jia Hao doesn’t have enough money to buy it, but the sales lady wraps it for him and charges it to William Norman.

Jia Hao accepts it and decides to deal with the consequences later.Jia Hao leaves the store, and there a shady men in another car is tracking him.

Chu Man is at a photoshoot and she gets a call from Chairman Wang. He wants to know where she is and if he can come visit her? She tells him not to come because she’s busy and working late. The Chairman asks his driver what Chu Man’s schedule is today, and is told that she’s supposedly done by noon.

Jia Hao comes to see Chu Man at her photoshoot. Peter and all the other models run over to watch the two pretty people together.

Chu Man apologizes for leaving yesterday without saying goodbye. Jia Hao asks if he’s not supposed to see her again? Chu Man says she left because his performance was subpar yesterday, which leaves poor Jia Hao mortified.

Then Chu Man laughs and says she was just joking. Jia Hao smiles and tells her that he did very well in his violin performance today because he found his muse. Chu Man is thrilled and tells him that she’s happy to hear how he really feels. Chu Man is willing to be his muse.

Jia Hao notices that everyone is watching them and asks if they can go somewhere quiet to talk.

They take off and Chairman Wang has arrived on set. Peter tries to stall him but Sasha, the other upcoming model, reveals that Chu Man just left with another man.

Jia Hao asks again if Chu Man meant it when she agreed to be his muse, but what if he’s not a member of the Norman family? Chu Man thinks he’s just being cautious with her and gives him her bullshit that she doesn't care if he’s rich, she likes him for who he is. Jia Hao takes out the bracelet and offers it to Chu Man.

He tells her that he’s just an ordinary guy who wants to be with Chu Man, so will she accept him? Chu Man says that another man wanted to put this bracelet on her but she declined. For a woman to agree to eternity takes a lot of courage, but for him, she’s will to take this chance. Jia Hao puts the bracelet on her.

Suddenly a car pulls up and drags Jia Hao away. Chu Man notices but is too late as the car has sped off.

She gets on a moped and takes off after them. William Norman’s family retainer is on the phone with the police and confirm that the kidnappers after William Norman have been lured out by the substitute.

Jia Hao gets taken to an empty house where he’s grilled by the kidnappers on the passwords to the Norman family bank accounts. Jia Hao tries to explain that he is NOT the real William Norman but no one believes him.

Chu Man arrives and runs inside to help Jia Hao but she’s grabbed as well. She lies that the bank password is her measurements, which changes every day.A kidnapper takes Chu Man’s measurements and it’s inputted into the computer. Chu Man is warned that if she lied to them, there will be two dead bodies in the front page of the newspaper tomorrow. Funny enough, the password works!

but luckily the police arrive right then and rescue Jia Hao and Chu Man.

Outside the police station, the media is congregated and want an interview. Chu Man decides to preen and make a public declaration. She announces to the world that she is Lin Chu Man, and she is William Norman’s lady love. She tells the live broadcast watching audience that William Norman loves her so much that her measurements were used as the password to the family bank account.She’s willing to be with William forever. She announces to Chairman Wang that they are over and he shouldn’t come bother her anymore. The media tells Chu Man that the real William Norman is in hiding and this guy was just a substitute used to lure out the kidnappers.

Jia Hao gets paid his final wages for being William Norman’s substitute, but he’s mad that he was lured to do such a dangerous activity. He gets paid his final wages and is told to keep the suit as a bonus payment. Chu Man overhears all this. She runs out after the retainer leaves and asks Jia Hao if he’s William Norman?

Jia Hao confesses that his real name is Tsai Jia Hao, but he really is a student at the Paris Music Academy. He tells Chu Man not to reveal his side gig as William Norman’s substitute otherwise he’ll get kicked out of school. Chu Man asks what his real family does for a living, and is told that they sell vegetables in the market.Chu Man can’t believe that she would end her engagement to one of the richest men in China for the son of a vegetable seller with such a poor-sounding name.

Chu Man grabs his phone and tries to call Chairman Wang.Ah Hao chases after her, asking if she doesn’t really like him? Chu Man says that she thought he was a rich guy otherwise she wouldn't give him the time of day.

She runs out and sees Chairman Wang waiting for her. Jia Hao tries to stop her but Chu Man tells him to let go – she’s a materialistic girl and Jia Hao shouldn’t think otherwise of herJia Hao begs her to stop considering wealth and position, spending the last two days together, doesn’t she have real feelings for him? She tells him to let go, he can’t afford to tear her expensive outfit. She threatens to tell the school that he was taking a part time job and get him kicked out if he doesn’t let go.

Jia Hao lets go and Chu Man quickly runs to Chairman Wang. The Chairman asks who the boy is and Chu Man says that person is a nobody.

She kisses the Chairman on the cheek and they get in the car. Jia Hao walks away with a stunned expression, unable to believe that this is the real Chu Man.

Chairman Wang takes Chu Man to a park, telling her that they need to talk without the driver around. He asks her where her engagement ring went? She says that she doesn’t wear the ring for work. He takes out the ring and says that today he’s here to take the ring back. He congratulates her on finding the man of her dreams.Chu Man tries to mollify him but he tells her that his brain is not made out of tofu. He shows her pictures of all the men she cheated on him with. For the last six months that she’s been with him, she’s been riding an ass while looking for a stallion.

Chairman Wang says that they are already engaged and she’s still looking for a better prospect. He takes her expensive limited edition purse and throws it on the ground, telling her to keep it as a memento. Chu Man tells the Chairman that he ought to show some gentlemanly behavior right now and let them end this with some class.The Chairman walks back and tells Chu Man that he can display class, but then he grabs her wrist with the Chaumet bracelet, and tells Chu Man and he can’t accept this level of trampling on his male ego. She wouldn’t accept that bracelet from him, but she let some boy she just met put it on her. During their time together, she’s refused to say “I Love You” to him. She’s willing to playact and say anything, but she never ever is willing to say I love you.

Chairman Wang tells Chu Man not to think so highly of herself. Shallow materialistic girls like her are a dime a dozen. He even knows that she orchestrated their first meeling when she picked him up. The Chaiman gives her a dirty look and asks how her mother raised her?Chu Man walks over and picks up the purse. Her mother abandoned her to live a better life, so her mother taught her that the only way to live a better life in this world is to marry a rich man and climb the social ladder. Chu Man then turns it on Chairman Wang – does he think having money means he can buy a person’s real emotions?She shows him the Chaumet bracelet, which a poor student bought, but it’s worth a million times what Chairman Wang did. Because it’s genuine. She tells the Chairman that he will never find a prettier girl than her. All the Chairman does is use money to get pretty young girls, but no one will give him their genuine emotions. If the Chairman had no money, then no woman would want him.

Chu Man leaves and tells the Chairman to live a long happy life. The Chairman yells out after her that he won’t let Chu Man or Jia Hao get away with this. We see the Chairman get connected on the phone to the Paris Music Academy.

.Later that night, Yi Xian comes running inside to tell Jia Hao that she warned him not to take part time jobs. Suddenly both Jia Hao and Mai Long get a call to come to school.

Jia Hao has been expelled for violating school rules, especially since this matter has been altered to the media that he hoodwinked a Taiwanese model.

Chu Man is packing up to head back to Taiwan, complaining that Chairman Wang won’t even pay for the room which costs an arm and a leg. The other models arrive to rub some salt on the wound and pretend they are here to give her some lunch. Sasha says that Chu Man needs to change her basic materialistic philosophy or else she’ll always lose in the end.Sasha shows Chu Man the news articles that report she fell for a fake wealthy man. The other model say they don’t want to land a rich man, they just want a successful modeling career. In fact, they all claim to believe in true love. It’s revealed that Sasha got the magazine cover. They models leave and Chu Man tells Peter that it’s horrible how even these newbie models like Sasha can deride her.

Peter notices the Chaumet bracelet on Chu Man and informs her that the legend attached to that bracelet is true. If a woman dares to take the bracelet off, then she’ll be doomed to a lifetime of being alone. Chu Man tries to remove the bracelet and suddenly there is a clap of thunder outside and a photo frame falls down. Chu Man decides that the bracelet is a genuine brand name item unlike the lying Jia Hao, so she’ll keep wearing it.

Jia Hao is packing his bags to go home. He looks at his suit and thinks back to his time with Chu Man. The poor boy looks around the apartment building and starts to sniffle. He finds a bag of Chinese herbs and medicine that his older sister packed for him before he left for Paris, and her reminder that his deceased dad is waiting to see Jia Hao accomplish great things. Jao Hao cries and tells his sister and dad that he didn’t fulfill their expectations of him, all because of this horrible girl he met.

Chu Man and Peter arrive back in Taiwan from Paris. At the arrival terminal, Chu Man wonders why there are no paparrazi around to welcome her. Suddenly they notice Jia Hao sitting on top of his luggage in the terminal. Peter wonders if he already graduated from the Academy so quickly? Chu Man realizes that Jia Hao looks so genuinely poor, milking his drink for every last drop of goodness. Chu Man walks out of the terminal, muttering to herself that she better not see him again.

At a very luxurious condo building, a rich older woman sits down to her breakfast. Suddenly her table starts to shake because of the noisy reverberations from outside. Her face tightens and she walks to the window and looks down. Outside are all these luxury high rises, but there is a ramshackle outdoor market situated right in the middle like an eyesore.

Three young hoodlums (one is a little boy) walk through the marketplace looking like they are here to pick a fight.The three hoodlums ask if there is a “Handsome Boy Gang” around here.This marketplace is actually called Due South Market .

The three hoodlums find the three young boys and beat them up, asking where the Handsome Boy Gang is.

Suddenly all the market place denizens show up and announce that they are the Due South Gang.The meat seller introduces everyone and this scene is so freaking hilarious if you get both the Monga and the Stephen Chow movie Kung Fu homage. We have the dorky meatseller, the hobo beggar apple seller Si Li, the handsome muscular fishmonger Leo. Jia Hao’s sister is a vegetable seller at the market.

Suddenly a man in a suit arrives pretending he wants to buy vegetables. The marketplace denizens know he’s here to buy them out so that the market can be razed to make way for yet another luxury high rise. The market folks refuse to sell because this is their livelihood and their community, no matter how much money is offered.

In fact, Si Li the apple seller has been waiting for his fiancee to come back after many years, and she promised to meet him at this market so he can’t leave. And neither can any of them because they are a family.

Jia Hao arrives back at the market to find it empty. He breathes a sigh of relief that no one is around to welcome him back from his disgrace at getting expelled from the Academy

Material Queen Episode 1

Long time ago,on an ordinary night in a typical city, an extraordinary story is about to happen. A little girl is about to lose what she loves most in her life. Perhaps the beginning of this story appears conventional, but it really isn’t a common fairy tale..
A little girl name Lin Chu Man follows her mother down a dark cobblestone street, asking mom if she really is abandoning her? Mom is impatient to be rid of her and huffs that she never wanted a child anyway and Chu Man will be better off in an orphanage with food to eat and a roof over her head. Chu Man cries and her mom tells her to stop snivelling. She needs to learn one cold hard truth today, which is that if they had money, she wouldn't be in this predicament.

So Chu Man needs to grow up well and earn lots of money if she wants to get over what is happening to her today. Mom tells Chu Man to never come find her, because her life will be better off without having to take care of a child.Chu Man stops crying and just looks at her mom. She wipes her tears and walks into the orphanage with a smile. She asks if this place is bigger than their home, and she will have ice-cream to eat. Mom looks surprised and says yes.Chu Man turns and tells her mom that she ought to leave then. Mom walks away and Chu Man sees what appears to be fireflies lighting up as her mother walks further and further away.From then on, Chu Man eats, sleeps, and grows up all by herself. She adapts well, never showing any sadness. Sometimes Chu Man will look out the window with wistful expression, as if waiting for something. Chu Man learns to love beautiful shiny things, just like the shiny fireflies that were there when her mom left. One day, she stopped believing in miracles.

One Christmas eve, Chu Man tears the beard off Santa and tells all the kids that Santa Claus doesn’t exist. She’s reprimanded and heads outside to sit on the rooftop balcony. Suddenly a strange man appears next to her, showing her a coin. He asks her to pick which hand holds the coin. She picks correctly then she can have it.Chu Man is told that she has one chance to pick correctly, and if she does, what she wants most in the world will come true.Chu Man picks incorrectly – there is no coin in that palm. She derides the existence of magic. The man says that making a coin disappear is just chicanery, but the real magic is about awakening what is inside Chu Man’s heart.He opens the other palm and a firefly flies away. He tells Chu Man that the firefly was what she really wanted.

Chu Man says there are no fireflies in the Winter, but she looks up and sees fireflies in the air. The man disappears, leaving Chu Man with one advice: she needs to believe, and then it will come true. If she doesn’t believe she can never find happiness. From now on, unless she truly means it, she will never be able to say I Love You. And a magical journey is about to begin.

23years later,Chu Man grow up and become a supermodel doing a photoshoot in Paris.She is fully aware of her own beauty and is unafraid to use it.

Her rich, much older, and very countrified Mainland Chinese business tycoon boyfriend arrives to try to woo Chu Man back. Chu Man plays hard to get and Chairman Wang lays on the abject apology.

Chu Man finally relents when sugar daddy whips out a giant honking engagement ring and promises that she’s the one he wants forever and ever. Chu Man’s eyes glisten when she sees the bauble. Chairman Wang declares that he loves her. When Chu Man tries to reciprocate, suddenly she burps. All she can say is “me, too.”

Chu Man’s other supermodel colleagues are both envious of her good fortune in landing one of the richest men in China, but also deriding her for selling herself to an old ugly man for money. Chu Man doesn’t believe in miracles like there being a young, rich, and handsome man out there to land.

The models gossip about wealthy heir William Norman, who is purportedly in Paris and one of the most sought after bachelors in the world.We see Chu Man create an opportunity to bump into Chairman Wang and lay her honey trap on him. She’s completely transparent, but he’s always completely aware.

Buyer and Seller are entering into a bargain with eyes wide open.Chu Man’s recalls that her teacher taught her to work hard, and she has. Everything she has today she worked hard for. The only thing she doesn’t believe in is miracles.

Chu Man shopping all over Paris. She would rather have a manmade item like a diamond rather than an I Love You. Love will disappear, cannot be guaranteed or warranted. So she wants something secure and tangible.

Chu Man and Chairman Wang walk into the Chaumet boutique and check out a diamond bracelet with a romantic superstition tied to it. It can only be put on by the person who truly loves you, and only that person can take it off.

Chairman Wang immediately wants to buy it for Chu Man, but she hesitates and makes the excuse that he’s bought so much for her already, she doesn’t need it. Especially when the sales lady emphatically states that the bracelet means lovers united for all of eternity and can never be separated.

Chu Man admires her engagement ring and sighs that her life is perfect, but for the man she is marrying being a complete toad. But she doesn’t believe there is a man out there who is single, handsome, rich, and not a complete nutcase.

Chu Man and Chairman Wang head back to the hotel. He tells her to go wash up and he’ll wait for her in bed. She laughs but Chairman Wang does not ask her why she’s happy. Chu Man looks a touch disturbed by his lack of interest in her. After she washes up she walks out to find him fast asleep snoring in bed. Chu Man sighs and heads out

She goes to a bar and sees Jia Hao playing the violin.She asks for a drink and Jia Hao offers to serve her. The bartender leaves but not before insulting Chu Man (in French) calling her a whore. Chu Man is furious and tries to claw at him, but is restrained by Jia Hao.She asks him to continue playing the violin, but he tells her that when one is feeling down, listening to such sad songs will only make her feel worse.

Chu Man shows him her engagement ring and tells him that she got engaged today. He congratulates her and reminds her that it’s quite late. He treats her to a glass of whisky and tells her to drink it and go home.Chu Man says her fiancée pursued her all the way to Paris and promised her a wedding of the century with a wedding dress designed by Vera Wang. Jia Hao asks if she’s happy then? Chu Man looks shocked and stammers that of course she’s happy. Jia Hao asks why she’s here right now then?

Jia Hae gives Chu Man two tickets for the Seine River cruise, explaining that it’s the most beautiful way to see Paris. Chu Man wants to pay for the tickets but Jia Hae refuses, saying that she already tipped him more than enough earlier for playing the violin.Chu Man asks Jia Hao – if one day the person you love suddenly laughed, would you want to know why? He replies of course he would.

Chu Man realizes that Chairman Wang doesn’t care how she genuinely feels. Chu Man gets up to leave, asking if he’ll be back here tomorrow. Jia Hao says no, he’s just a student at the Paris Music Academy and moonlights here.

Chu Man suddenly kisses Jia Hao, explaining that she doesn’t like to owe people for anything. Chu Man walks outside, wishing that if only Jia Hao were a rich man.

Jia Hao walks outside and a limo waiting for him and someone identify him as Mr. William. He’s whisked away.

The next morning Chu Man tries to sneak out of the hotel room and Chairman Wang wakes up and asks to accompany her. She demurs saying all she’s going to do is work. She hands him an itinerary telling him that she ought to go sightseeing in Paris. Chairman Wang notes that Chu Man’s itinerary has him going all around in circles wasting time on travel between spots.Chu Man says that she wanted him to rest between each spot so that’s why she scheduled it so he’s running all over Paris. On the way to the photoshoot, Peter reminds Chu Man that her next goal is to land the cover of the coveted Japan Airline’s calendar, with all her other models competing with her for the spot.

During the photoshoot, the other girls are gossiping about William Norman, who is purported to be in Paris. Turns out he was adopted by the wealthy Norman family and is of Asian descent. They also discuss that he’s currently a student. Chu Man sees his picture and realizes that the young man she met last night was William Norman.

The best part is that Chu Man is wearing a ridiculous couture outfit that looks like a bird cage. And when she toddles off, another model mentions how that bird cage sure can run fast.

Jia Hao is performing for his professor in preparing for the upcoming final exam. The professor chides him for playing without heart and not understanding how to express love through his music. The professor thinks Jia Hao just strings notes together without understanding how to turn music into emotions.

Chu Man takes a taxi, after dolling herself up, and heads to the Paris Music Academy to land herself a rich, handsome, young man. Peter calls her and tells her that she’s missing out on landing the cover for the calendar. Chu Man says that you can’t put caviar in front of her and not expect her to chase after it.Chu Man takes off her engagement ring and uses a dropped bag ruse to jump in front of the car .She’s reluctant to toss her Dior bag in front of the car.

She pretends to be surprised to see Jia Hao. She claims that she came specifically to see him because he left something with her. She takes out a napkin! Jia Hao looks at her like the freak golddigger she is and says “wow.”

He gives her the napkin from now on, and Chu Man uses this opportunity to mention that she’s ended her engagement to her fiancee. She says her fiancee has another woman on the side. Chu Man pretends that she hurt herself during a fight with her fiancee. Jia Hao wants to buy her a new bag but Chu Man says its a limited edition. She suggests he buy her a meal. She introduces herself as Chu Man, and asks if she can call him William.

Inside the limo, Chu Man asks for something to drink but Jia Hao can’t find the fridge. She asks about his music, and Jia Hao confesses he might not be a student at the Academy for long since his talent doesn't appear to be all there. Chu Man says he must be very talented. Jia Hao says that he plays music for people all over the place, but no one ever stops to listen to him play.

Chu Man asks Jia Hao to accompany her somewhere and they head to the Seine River. She tells Jia Hao that she’s worked so hard to come here because it’s every woman’s dream to be here. She knows people look down on her, but she doesn’t believe in heaven or hell. The world is a cruel place and she only wants to survive.

They take a river cruise to enjoy the view. Chu Man tells Jia Hao that his life needs to be lived for himself even if no one understands him. If he wants to play the violin, he should do it. Jia Hao tells Chu Man that the woman who just said this nugget of wisdom to him can’t be a shallow person. She replies that she’s just someone looking for real love.

Rather than go out to eat (which is expensive), Jia Hao suggests that they head back the Norman estate and he will cook for her. Chu Man thinks that she’s close to landing her prize since he’s so forward.

Jia Hao adorably cooks for Chu Man as she watches him. Suddenly Chairman Wang calls and Chu Man has to go placate him.She lies that she’s still modelling. He wants to visit her but she tells him to keep touring and to take pictures of every place he goes.

Chu Man and Jia Hao dine al fresco. Chu Man asks what other interests he has. He likes the beach so she thinks he has a personal yacht. Jia Hao sees Chu Man fidgeting and suggests he take her shoes off.

They stand up and walk in the garden. Jia Hao takes off his shoes and socks as well as they run around. He thanks her for helping him understand how to take the test tomorrow.

He wants to give her a song as his thanks. Jia Hao’s song makes Chu Man remember how her mother left her and growing up in the orphanage. But she smiles as she watches him finish playing.She asks why he played this song for her. He says she reminds me of the boy in the song, strong and independent, but the real her is like a lost and lonely girl. Chu Man says she didn’t believe in making wishes or believing in miracles.

She gets close to Jia Hao and says that she believes in miracles now because she met him.Chu Man leans in for a kiss and they start making out on the lawn.

Making out outside ends up being naked on the bed inside. When Jia Hao wakes up, Chu Man has already left.

She left one earring behind for him. The Norman family retainer comes to get Jia Hao and tells him that he needs to leave now since his job is done for today as William’s substitute.

The retainer drops Jia Hao off and hands him an envelope with money. He’s asked to continue to be William’s substitute for the next two days, and then this job is done. What Jia Hao spent on Chu Man today has already been deducted from the salary. Jia Hao asks why William Norman wants him to be his substitute? The retainer says that William is learning to fish and is waiting to catch a fish before he appears.

Chu Man walks back to the hotel, against the gorgeous backdrop of the brightly lit Eiffel tower.

Chu Man takes off her one earring,Suddenly Chu Man gets a call from Peter, who is warning her that Chairman Wang is looking for her and is already at her hotel room. Chu Man tells Peter to stall for her and she’ll be back in 10 minutes.

Synopsis

Lin Chu Man is a fashion model who does not prejudice against a man for being short, fat, ugly and old, as long as he is rich. So when she discovers that her pefect man is only a hired body double for the real billionaire "Mr. Norman," and his true identity is a penniless music student in Paris named Cai Jia Hao, she immediately dumps him. As karma would have it, she loses her job to a younger model, her rich lover kicks her to the curb and she finds out Cai Jia Hao will be her new roommate. Lin and Cai's unexpected living arrangement forces them to reconcile and to really get to know each other. As Lin becomes closer to Cai, her goal of nabbing the real estate tycoon Yan Kai Ming becomes less of a priority. She starts to question whether being rich is what she truly desires.
